Book report of Oliver Twist

——analysis of symbolism in Oliver Twist

Type of work

Novel

Point of view

The narrator is third person omniscient, and assumes the points of view of various characters in turn. The narrator’s tone is not objective; it is sympathetic to the protagonists and far less so to the novel’s other characters. When dealing with hypocritical or morally objectionable characters, the narrative voice is often ironic or sarcastic.

Setting

In the 1830s, London and environs; an unnamed smaller English city; the English countryside

Tone

Sentimental, sometimes ironic, hyperbolic, crusading

Foreshadowing

The truth about Oliver’s parentage is foreshadowed by the portrait in Mr. Brownlow’s house, by the locket that Old Sally has stolen, and by Monks’s pursuit of Oliver.

Major conflict

Although Oliver is fundamentally righteous, the social environment in which he is raised encourages thievery and prostitution. Oliver struggles to find his identity and rise above the abject conditions of the lower class. Theme

To criticize the failure of charity and the idealization of countryside, and to remind people of the purity in a corrupt city.

Style

Realistic romanticism

The story is about an orphan, Oliver Twist, who endures a miserable existence in a workhouse and then is placed with an undertaker. He escapes and travels to London where he meets the Artful Dodger, leader of a gang of juvenile pickpockets. Oliver is led to the lair of their elderly criminal trainer Fagin, naively unaware of their unlawful activities.

The setting of this novel is fog in London as the background. It uses the complex plots and characters show the British social reality, and uses exaggeration and irony reflects the dark side of society. At the same time, everywhere in the work embodies the romantic, the author uses the kind-hearted of a gentleman to show fantasies and hopes of the society.

The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London.

Oliver Twist was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I am really impressed by his kind-hearted and lenient. And it is so adamant of him after being through all the twist. What he has been throug(转载于:www.cSSyq.co m 书 业 网:雾都孤儿读书报告英文)h is just like his name, and I have to say the author is really adept at using symbols. This novel is full of symbolism. For the characters’ names, they have their own meanings. The names of characters represent personal qualities. Oliver Twist himself is the most obvious example. The name “Twist,” though given by accident, alludes to the outrageous reversals of fortune that he will experience. Rose Maylie’s name echoes her association with flowers and springtime, youth and beauty. Toby Crackit’s name is a lighthearted reference to his chosen profession of breaking into houses. Mr. Bumble’s name connotes his bumbling arrogance; Mrs. Mann’s, her lack of maternal instinct; and Mr. Grimwig’s, his superficial grimness that can be removed as easily as a wig.

London Bridge is another symbol. Nancy’s decision to meet Brownlow and Rose on London Bridge reveals the symbolic aspect of this bridge in Oliver Twist. Bridges exist to link two places that would otherwise be separated by an uncrossable chasm. The meeting on London Bridge represents the collision of two worlds unlikely ever to come into contacts—the idyllic world of Brownlow and Rose, and the atmosphere of degradation in which Nancy lives. On the bridge, Nancy is given the chance to cross over to the better way of life that the others represent, but she rejects that opportunity, and by the time the three have all left the bridge. that possibility has vanished forever. The dog in Oliver Twist is an important symbol too. He seems to mirror the

wicked nature of his owner, Bill Sykes. After Sikes murders Nancy, Bull’s-eye comes to represent Sikes’s guilt. The dog leaves bloody footprints on the floor of the room where the murder is committed. Not long after, Sikes becomes desperate to get rid of the dog, convinced that the dog’s presence will give him away. Yet, just as Sikes cannot shake off his guilt, he cannot shake off Bull’s-eye, who arrives at the house of Sikes’s demise before Sikes himself does. Bull’s-eye’s name also conjures up the image of Nancy’s eyes, which haunts Sikes until the bitter end and eventually causes him to hang himself accidentally.

The author makes considerable use of symbolism. The many symbols Oliver faces are primarily good versus evil, with evil continually trying to corrupt and exploit good, but good winning out in the end. Briefly, the author manages to skilfully paint a picture of the dark, dirty and dangerous alley-ways of Victorian London by symbolism.

With these symbols, I find the novel deeper, richer, more meaningful and colorful. The author uses symbolism to allude to a mood or feeling without coming out and stating that particular emotion. As the result, this novel become very well known and it has a huge effect in English literature. It successfully presents the underworld and problems of poverty through the typical figure Oliver. The works deeply reveals the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and the tragic life of downer class citizen in 18th century in Britain.

BOOK REPORT_Oliver Twist

Charles Dickens is one of the most famous novelists of the Victorian Age. When Charles Dickens was young, his father was put into prison. During this time, Dickens was living by himself and working in the underground cell of a shoe blacking factory. Maybe it is because this period of experience that makes Charles Dickens’s works are more focused on the living condition of the poor. In many of his novels, Dickens showed his sympathy for the poor. Just like this book-Oliver Twist in which Charles Dickens described the miserable life of the poor children and exposed the seedy side of the society at that time.

Oliver Twist is one of Charles Dickens' most popular stories. Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse in 1930s. Later, he was sent to a Coffin shop as an apprentice. As he couldn’t endure the oppression from his boss, he fled to London. However, on the way to London, he was cheated into the haunt of thieves and trained to be a thief. On one occasion, he was taken in by a rich man—Mr. Brownlow. But unfortunately, he was framed and entrapped into the haunt of thieves again. But Oliver still believes that there are hopes in his life. Finally, Nancy, a kind-hearted woman pickpocket, rescued Oliver from dangers despite the threat of the thief-in-chief and told Brownlow that actually Oliver is his good friend’s son. Nancy was killed at the end of the story, but the police surround the haunt of thieves immediately and Oliver reunited with his family members.

Of the characters in this story, Oliver, Nancy and Miss Ross represent the goodness that they are born in suffering, grow in dark world, but still keep a heart of

gold. None of the hardships can through them into the hell. Oliver is a brave and strong child that he suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. But no matter how tough his life is he never gives up his belief. What’s more, in Oliver Twist, morality and nobility are always black-and-white issues. Just like Monks, who was a greedy, ruthless, shameless person, represents the black, Olive can represents the white. But Nancy, a thief who has done something bad, finally been influenced by Oliver and decided to help Oliver. This gives us the implication that the boundary between virtue and vice is not always so distinct.

Charles Dickens praised ideal human nature and interpersonal relationships and he hoped to use his pen to express his ideals in that the reality is very cruel. So, through this novel, Dickens criticized the seedy side of the capitalist society at that time and expressed his deep sympathy about the bottom class who lived in a miserable life. In this way the people could realize the social reality and consider more about their behavior. But on the other hand, Dickens shows his wish through this novel that people should firm their belief no matter what they are suffering about and evil can never prevail over good.

Book Report: 《Oliver Twist》

When I was a freshman, I have read part of the novel Oliver Twist and also seen the movie, but I did not really know the true meaning that it contains. This year I gain a chance to study English novels and therefore I have studied Oliver Twist further.

The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He was only a little boy who should have been cared by his parents, while he had to lived by himself and suffer enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse.Child as he was, he was desperate with hunger and reckless with misery. I was shocked by his tragic experiences. Compared with him, are we much happier than him? But few of us realize that. We always think God treat us unfairly and complain that we have no much money to spend, no beautiful cloth to wear, no dignified quality, and no attractive face. Are we too greedy? So we should learn to be contended and learn to be happy.

In spite of my pity for Oliver’s unlucky experience, what impressed me most is that though little Oliver suffered

much he still remained a pour heart and fought with the evil bravely.Although he was born in a poor family and grew up in the dark and criminal world .He still kept an unsophisticated world and a kind heart. No matter how hard he was, he never gave up and corrupt. He showed us his gracious quality .This inspires me very much, and in our current society we face too many difficulties and temptations, can we be ourselves? In face of money and interest, many people give in it. They lost their minds and became degenerated. In face of difficulties, we lose heart and become discouraged. Can we face it bravely like Oliver?

The poor children had the opportunity to observe the residents of the London streets from close quarters. In order to escape the pangs of hunger and shadow of insecurity, they took to lied ,stolen ,cheated and did all criminal things what they could do.Poverty lead to crime and crime result in isolation.

For instance, Nacy was an unfortunate woman who had fallen into the evil hands of Fagin because of her poverty and destitution. She was haunted by her guilt and regretted her presence in the criminal world. However, she felt

helpless in the midst of criminals who fail to understand her feelings and offer her no sympathy. She felt isolated from the world around her. So we should have a deep contemplation from Nacy ’death. So in our life we should stretch a hand to the poor and should not be so mean to the beggar otherwise we are the same as the people in the warehouse. If every of us show out our sympathetic side, our society can be more harmonious.

Oliver, Nacy and Rose were all the representatives of the kind .Nacy treated Oliver as her young brother so that she helped and cared him in many situations even she finally killed by his bloody husband for rescuing Oliver. Brown protected Oliver from murdering because he was kind and sympathetic to him. All they were strong due to their kind hearts. The goodness eventually conquered devil, all the evil people were punished, all the kind people have a happy ending. For me, the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary character for a person. Goodness is to humans what water is to fish. He who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person. On the contrary, as the famous saying goes, ‘The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose’, he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a

happy and useful person.

So I believe righteousness can always beat evil and good people will have good endings. I think what I thought is also what the author wants to tell. Although there are many ugly things in the world, we must believe that righteousness can always beat evil. We must store kindness even though we are in ugly situation. One is poor if he doesn’t have kindness. One is rich if he has kindness. So please store your kindness in your mind.

So the world is dirty but we must maintain a pure soul. Everyone should devote himself to the world and in that way our world will become nice . We must value our present conditions ,study hard and become a useful person for the society as well as make contribution to the society. ——数学1401 小乾
