Time in the Animal World

Rhythm〔节奏〕 controls everything in Nature.

The sun provides a basic time rhythm for all living creatures〔生物〕including humans. Nearly all animals are influenced〔影响〕by sun cycles and have developed a biological clock in their bodies following these cycles. The moon also exerts〔发挥〕its force and influence on the sea. Its gravitational〔万有引力的、重力的〕attraction〔吸引〕causes the rising of the tide〔潮汐〕. The tide goes out when the moon the moon is behind the Earth, centrifugal force causes the second tide of the day.

Animals living in tidal areas must have the instinct〔本能〕of predicting〔预测〕these changes, to avoid〔避开〕being stranded〔使…滞留〕and dying of dehydration〔脱水〕. Since the time of the dinosaurs〔恐龙〕, the king crab has been laying eggs at the seaside in a set way. To avoid predator〔以掠食为生〕fish, the eggs are always far from seawater and protected by sand. In the following two months ,the eggs undergo〔经历〕dramatic〔戏剧性的〕changes related to the cycles of the moon. When the second sping tide comes, the young king crabs〔鲎〕have matured〔成熟〕.

Most of the mammals t either the giant〔巨大的〕elephant or the small shrew . have the same average total number of heartbeats in their lifetime. Shrews live only for two and a half years. and spend their life at a high speed and high tempo〔拍子、速度〕. Animals like shrews with a pulse〔脉搏〕rate of 600 per minute have an average total of eigbt hundr~ million heartbeatsS throughout their life. The African elephant has a pulse rate of 25 beats〔跳动〕per minute, and a life span〔寿命〕 of 60 years. The size of the body determines〔决定〕the speed of life. As we get older, our sense of time is being influenced〔影响〕by the

physiological changes of our body. The elderly〔老年人〕spend more time resting, and do few sports. For a child , a week is seen as long time.

练习:

A For an adult〔成年人或动物〕, time goes fast year by year.

B It controls , for example , the flapping of birds' wings〔翅膀〕, the beating of the heart and the rising and setting of the sun.

C The larger the anirnal is , the longer its life span is and the slower its life tempo is.

D The tide goes out when the moon moves away and its attraction is weaker. E We always tend to think all the anirnals have the same sense of time as human beings.

F The second spring tide takes them back to the sea.
