A One evening after dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Tisich called a family meeting. ?We’ve had to make a difficult decision,‖ Mr. Tisich announced. ?You see, your mother has been offered a post as co-director of a television station in Chicago. Unfortunately, the station is not here. After thinking long and hard about it, we’ve concluded that the right decision is to move to Chicago.‖ Marc looked shocked, while his sister Rachel breathlessly started asking when they’d be moving. ?It’s surprising, but exciting!‖ she said. Marc simply said, ?We can’t go—I can’t leave all my friends. I’d rather stay here and live with Tommy Lyons!‖ The Tisichs hoped that by the time they moved in August, Marc would grow more accustomed to the idea of leaving. However, he showed no signs of accepting the news, refusing to pack his belongings.
When the morning of the move arrived, Marc was nowhere to be found. His parents called Tommy Lyons’ house, but Mrs. Lyons said she hadn’t seen Marc. Mrs. Tisich became increasingly concerned, while her husband felt angry with their son for behaving so irresponsibly.
What they didn’t know was that Marc had started walking over to Tommy’s house, with a faint idea of hiding in Lyons’ attic(阁楼) for a few days. But something happened on the way as Marc walked past all the familiar landscape of the neighborhood: the fence that he and his mother painted, the tree that he and his sister used to climb, the park where he and his father often took evening walks together. How much would these mean without his family, who make them special in
the first place? Marc didn’t take the time to answer that question but instead hurried back to his house, wondering if there were any moving cartons(纸板箱)the right size to hold his record collection.

C Deserts are found where there is little rainfall or where rain for a whole year falls in only a few weeks' time. Ten inches of rain may be enough for many plants to survive if the rain is spread throughout the year, If it falls, within one or two months and the rest of the year is dry, those plants may die and a desert may form.
Sand begins as tiny pieces of rock that get smaller and smaller as wind and weather wear them down. Sand dunes are formed as winds move the sand across the desert. Bit by bit, the dunes grow over the years, always moving with the winds and changing the shape. Most of them are only a few feet tall, but they can grow to be several hundred feet high.
valleys were formed from thick mud that once lay beneath a sea more than millions of years ago. Over the centuries, the water dried up. Wind, sand, rain, heat and cold all wore away at the remaining rocks. The faces of the desert mountains are always changing—very, very slowly—as these forces of nature continue to work on the rock.
Most deserts have a surprising variety of life. There are plants, animals and insects that: have adapted to life in the desert. During the heat of the day, a visitor may see very few signs of living things, but as the air begins to cool in the evening, the desert comes to life. As the sun begins to rise again in the sky, the desert once again becomes quiet and lonely.
60. Many plants may survive in deserts when___________. A. the rain is spread out in a year
B. the rain falls only in a few weeks C. there is little rain in a year D. it is dry all the year round

62. The underlined sentence in the third paragraph probably means that in a desert there is____________.
A. too much sandB. more sand than before C. nothing except sandD. something else besides sand
63 It can be learned from the text that in a desert____________.A. there is no rainfall throughout the year
B. life exists in rough conditions C. all sand dunes are a few feet high D. rocks are worn away only by wind and heat
D When we walk through the city, we all experience a kind of information overload but we pay attention only to those that are important to us. We don’t stop, we keep our faces expressionless and eyes straight ahead, and in doing so, we are not just protecting ourselves but are avoiding overloading other people as well.
We make use of stereotypes (刻板的模式) as convenient ways to make quick judgements about situations and people around us. They may not always be accurate, and they can often be dangerously wrong, but they are used regularly.
The problem with the stereotypes is that they restrict experience. By using limited clues to provide us with a rapid opinion of other people or places we may choose to limit our communication. We may decide not to go to certain places because we believe they will not offer something we enjoy.
In the city, styles of dress are particularly important with regard to self-presentation. Different groups often use clearly identifiable styles of clothes so that they can be easily recognized. It is becoming increasingly common for brand names to be placed on the outside of clothes, and this labeling makes it easy to send out information about fashion and price instantly, and lets others tell at a distance whether an individual has similar tastes and is a suitable person to associate with.
In England, where social grouping or class continues to make social distinctions(区分), clothes, hairstyles, people’s pronunciation and the manner of speaking are all clues to our social group. Class distinctions tend to be relatively fixed, although in the city where greater variety is permitted, they are more likely to be secondary determining factors of friendship and association.
67. People walking in cities ignore the surroundings because __________.
A. they do not wish to talk to other people B。everyone else is expressionless
C.the environment is already familiar to themD.there is too much information to take in
68. According to the passage, the main disadvantage of using stereotypes is that they __________.
A. are likely to lead us into dangerous situations B.may make us miss some pleasant experience
C.can rarely be relied on D.make us mentally lazy
69. From the passage we may conclude that _________.
A. stereotypes can help to understand people fullyB.people are becoming more interested in fashion
C.dressing can send messages about individualsD.stereotypes can do more harm than good to people
70. It would appear that in England, a person’s class __________.
A. might be less important in making friends in a cityB.is mainly determined by his pronunciation
C.plays less of a role than it did in the pastD.is something that can be changed easily

Here are a few tips we’ve put together to help you learn English well. Speak, speak, speak!
Practise speaking as often as yon can--even speaking to yourself is good practice.Try recording yourself whenever you can. Compare your pronunciation with the master version, see how you can do better and have another go.If yon do this several times, you will find that each version is better than the last. Why not learn with someone else?
It helps if you can learn with someone else. If yon can persuade a friend or family member to study with yon,it will make you keep working.Agree times to meet and set goals for the week, and test each other regularly.
Don’t get stuck by a word you don’t know
Ptactise improvising(即兴的)ways of getting your meaning across when speaking spontaneously(本能地),even if yon don't know the exact words or phrases.Think of things yon might want to say whenever yon have spare time.A basic example is the rise of tenses. If you don't know the past tense but want to talk about yesterday, use the verb in the present tense and use the word for“yesterday”.Use facial expression, hand movements, anything to get your meaning across.
Language learning is also about intuition(直觉)
Guesswork is an important strategy in learning a new language. When listening to recorded material, yon aren’t expected to understand everything first time round. If you play the same piece several times, you will most probably understand something new each time.Learn to make maximum use of all the clues yon can pick up.For example, what do the speakers sound like? Happy? Angry? Calm? etc.
Build up your vocabulary
A wide vocabulary is the key to successful language learning but don't try to learn too mach at once. It’s best to study frequently, for short periods of time.Take a maximum of six or seven items of vocabulary and learn them.Put them into sentences to fix them in your mind, then come back to them later.Much of the vocabulary in the course is presented by topic.
And above all,have fun!
( )46.Why should one have himself recorded when practising speaking?
A. To encourage others to start B. To record his own progress.
C. To improve his speaking. D. To compare himself with others. ( )47.Which of the following is the most important in learning English?
A.Speaking.B.Pleasure.C.Intuition.D.Vocabulary.
( )48.It is implied in the passage that is helpful when you are learning
English.
A.body languageB.a good memory
C.a good friend D.a proper dictionary
( )49.Which of the following proverbs(谚语) seems not to be always true in
learning a language?
A.Practice makes perfect.B.A good beginning is half done.
C.Rome is not built in a day.D.Don’t run before you can walk.
B
By far the most common difficulty in study is simple failure to get down to regular concentrated work. This difficulty is much greater for those who do not work to a plan and have no regular routine of study. Many students muddle along ,doing a bit of this subject or that ,as the mood takes them, or letting their set work pile up until the last possible moment.
Few students work to a set timetable .They say that if they did work out a timetable for themselves they would not keep to it ,or would have to change it frequently ,since they can never predict (foresee) from one day to the next what their activities will be .
No doubt some students take much more kindly to a regular routine than others .There are many who shy away from a self-controlled weekly
timetable ,and dislike being tied down to a fixed programme of work .Many able students state that they work in cycles .When they become interested in a topic they work on it attentively for three or four days at a time .On other days they avoid work completely .It has to be admitted that we do not fully
understand the motivation(动机)to work .Most people over 25 years of age have become used to a work routine ,and the majority of really productive
workers set aside regular hours for the more important areas of their work .The “tough-minded” school of workers doesn’t fully accept the idea that good work can only be done naturally ,under the influence of inspiration(灵感). them have a mistaken belief either in their own talent or in the value of
“freedom” .Freedom from control and discipline(纪律)leads to unhappiness rather than to “self-expression” or “personality development” . Our society
insists on regular habits ,timekeeping and punctuality (准时),and whether we like it or not ,if we mean to make our way in society ,we have to meet its demands.
( )50.The most widespread problem in applying oneself to study
is A.changing from one subject to another
B.the failure to keep to a set timetable of work
C.the unwillingness to follow a systematic plan
D.working on a subject only when one feels like it
( )51.Which of the following is true?
A.Many students are not interested in using a self-controlled timetable.

At an outdoor restaurant, a cockroach(蟑螂)flew in and landed on a woman. She started screaming out of fear; with a panic stricken face and trembling voice, she started jumping, with both her hands desperately trying to get rid of the cockroach. Her reaction was spreading, as everyone in her group also got into a panic. The woman finally managed to flick the cock-roach away but it landed on a man in the group who continued the drama. In the relay of throwing, the cockroach next fell upon a waitress who had rushed to their rescue.
The waitress stood firm, calmed herself and observed the behavior of the cockroach on her blouse. When she was confident enough, she grabbed it and threw it out of the restaurant.
Sipping my coffee and watching the amusement, I started wondering: was the cockroach responsible for their funny behavior? If so, then why was the waitress not disturbed? She handled the situation to near perfection, without panic.
It was not the cockroach, but the inability of the customers to handle the disturbance caused by the cockroach that disturbed them. I realized that it?s not the shouting of my children or my boss or my wife that disturbs me, but my inability to handle the disturbances caused by their shouting.
It?s not the traffic jams on the road that disturb me, but my inability to handle the disturbance caused by the traffic jam. More than the problem, it?s my reaction to the I understood. I should not react in life. I should always respond. The customers reacted, whereas the waitress responded. Reactions are always instinctive(本能的)while responses tend to be well thought out.

“Where are we going, Dad?”, one of the hottest Chinese reality shows, has become a hit. Many famous stars brought their children to a strange village alone, and they had to spend 72 hours with their children there. The program fully showed us a modern version of the “how to be a good father”. As the young parents today are too busy to take care of their children, this new form of “Lost on the way” played by nanny Daddy and cute kids raised a lot of people?s emotional common feelings. Both the kids and their parents will find that their hearts are being drawn closer. But this kind of feeling has just proved that there is a big spiritual barrier between the modern parents and children.
The TV shows like “Children are hard to support!”, “Where are we going, Dad?”, “hot moms” and “cute kids” are becoming more and more popular. All of these show the new parents? confusion in children?s education and the appeal for the balance between career and family.
In real life, on the one hand, the young parents feel helpless because they are too busy to accompany their children under the pressures of work and life; on the other hand, they continue to do so. The data collected by Hunan TV shows that nearly two-thirds of their audience are female, among whom 36% are aged from 25 to 34. We can imagine such a scene that one evening a young mother is watching the show with her young children, while her husband is still at work or trapped in socializing, or maybe is just playing computer games in the bedroom. The story of a child without the company of father is still 3 C. poverty. D. harmony.
going on. In fact, it is sometimes the same to mothers. In a modern family, it is often the old who take the responsibility of raising a child. The participation of mother in the children?s education is also very low.
It is just this kind of confusion where the parents have gone in the modern family education, and where the parents will guide their children to go that “Where are we going, Dad?” shows us. If a child wants to grow up healthily and safely into a modem citizen with independent personality and free spirit, it is very important for him or her to follow the parents who serve as their first teacher. Maybe this is the real reason why such kind of TV programs could get hot. The truth is that children will go where their parents go; and society will go where the children go.

With a growing trend for feminists (女权主义者), common images of veiled(穿婚纱的)brides walking down the aisle on her father?s arm could become a thing of the past. Doing away with the engagement ring, choosing not to be ?given away like property? and wearing a colour other than white are key themes in the feminist wedding trend.
4 D. Indifferent.
The findings, revealed in a survey of 200 brides-to-be, suggested that almost a quarter of women planned on keeping their last name after marriage, while one in 10 were planning t(转 载 于:wWw.cssYQ.COm 书 业 网:高中英语试题题库)o wear a colour other than white on their wedding day.
Traditions such as the wearing of an engagement ring are also increasingly being rejected by brides who feel it is anti-feminist--with such an obvious symbol to be worn on the finger marking the woman ?taken?.
However, while there is undoubtedly exciting data among young brides, parents can take comfort in the fact that while some women are beginning to push back against the patriarchy (家长制), the majority are still keen to support certain traditions, with 76 per cent of brides saying they really would like their father to walk them down the aisle.
Elki Parmar of Wedding Days. Co.UK, who conducted the survey, said: “Some of the brides we have spoken to are doing things to make their wedding more ?feminist?. That could be reflected by deciding not to be given away, which means that the woman is property to be given away. Other brides are choosing not to wear white on their wedding day, since a woman?s white wedding dress traditionally carries meanings of virginal innocence. However, what the groom wears on his wedding day is not recognized to be symbolic, creating somewhat of an imbalance in some feminists? views”.
32. Which of the following is NOT the symbol of traditional wedding?
A. The bride wears bridal veil.
B. The bride wears a color other than white.
C. The bride wears the engagement ring.

A. Because they don?t get rings matched with their bridal veils.
B. Because it may cause their parents discomfort and sorrow.
C. Because they want to make their wedding more meaningful.
D. Because it is anti-feminist and marks themselves to be “taken”.
34. What can we learn from the survey in Paragraph 2?
